ID Keeper stores Web addresses, online IDs, passwords and other data on the smart chip in the credit card.

When the card is inserted into a smart card reader, customers can select from a list of saved Web sites and the application automatically recalls log-in information.

David Bonalle, vice president and general manager of advanced payments development, American Express, says: "ID Keeper combines the security and flexibility of smart chip technology with the convenience and reach of the Internet."

American Express says the Internet download capability of the application was developed through Datacard's Affina Life Cycle Management System.
