NCR says that its technology offers capabilities way beyond those of the traditional ATM, enabling customers to carry out 95% of normal teller transactions.

The system is designed to help cut operating costs by enabling tellers to simultaneously service multiple branches, while still connecting them with their customers face-to-face.

Yalcin Orhon, director, financial services, NCR Turkey, says: "Through longer teller-service hours and deeper interactions, Interactive Teller can help financial institutions efficiently provide improved services and a better experience to their customers - without losing that human touch."

Earlier this year Nationwide rolled out in-branch video links that let customers talk to off-site mortgage consultants at around 60 branches. The group's chief executive, Graham Beale, told Finextra that the technology was breathing new life into remote branches.

However, it has also proved controversial. Last year a Bank of America employee started an online petition asking the bank to stop the roll-out of video teller ATMs, saying the machines will replace well-paid branch staff with lower-wage call centre operatives.
