The NCR software will detect and pre-empt potential mechanical problems with individual machine components, performing diagnostics, and sending engineers before the ATMs break down.

Nationwide customers were hit by several glitches earlier this year. In August many were unable to withdraw money from cash machines.

"Great customer service and operational excellence are at the heart of many businesses, and Nationwide aims to lead the way in this regard,” says Jenny Groves, divisional director, branch and workplace transformation, at Nationwide Building Society. “What is rare is to find an innovative solution to help address both challenges. NCR SmartServ Predict is one such solution, and we look forward to the potential as we scale it out across our wider ATM network in 2016.”

The services will be rolled-out across Nationwide's 694 branches next year. Currently the technology is operational in the South West, Wales, and South Coast.

A system-wide inability to withdraw money from the entire ATM fleet is an issue with the core banking / transaction management ("real-time balance") system.  NCR's SmartServ won't address that kind of issue, even if it does improve individual machine reliability through predictive maintenance.
