According to Federal Reserve figures cited by Prosper, there was around $2.46 trillion in outstanding US consumer credit debt at the end of last year.

Yet it is still one of the last remaining social taboos, says the firm and this needs to be broken.

"This site is a place to share your stories about how you're tackling debt, and celebrate your milestones, as well as helping you find guidance and practical help," says Prosper.

In a bid to encourage users, everyone who shares their story on the site is entered into a sweepstake to win $1000.
