I've been working on the EBAday site at www.ebaday.com and noticed for some reason I keep mistyping the URL when I forward links to colleagues. As it happens, the subject matter on www.ebayday.com is somewhat different so they usually spot that I've made an error rather than assuming I've departed a little from the script.
These days the sheer number of registered domains mean that a single typo is more likely to bring up something unexpected, rather than a simple "site not found" message. My colleague Navjeet spotted a similar issue some time ago with www.temenos.ch (banking software company) and www.temenos.net (progressive lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community) while covering a Temenos event.
I sense there must be other examples....
