In the latest of our Breaking into Fintech series, which dives into the other end of the fintech hiring market and learns from leading companies in the field, Finextra interviewed Flutterwave’s chief people and culture officer, Mansi Babyloni, and associate vice president of talent management, Reni Odebiyi. 

Flutterwave is a Nigerian fintech company that offers payment infrastructure for merchants worldwide and payment service providers within Africa.

What top tips can you offer candidates looking to join the industry?

Babyloni and Odebiyi state that those looking to work in fintech should keep and eye out for major players in the industry, as well as paying attention to recent developments and trends in their area of interest. Keeping on top of current events in the sector will allow candidates to make informed decisions about the companies they are applying for and what roles they want.

They add that that being aware of regulation and compliance standards relevant to the industry they are applying in is also useful. Additionally, candidates should research what key skills are needed in the field and what they can do to fit into the jobs that are needed to be filled.

According to Babyloni and Odebiyi, “An ideal Flutterwave candidate would embody a perfect blend of technical prowess, passion for driving innovation in the African fintech space, adaptability, and a commitment to delivering exceptional solutions collaboratively. Candidates should also demonstrate robust business acumen, adept communication skills, a customer-centric mindset, and a resolute can-do attitude.”

They add that adaptability, collaborative spirit, and technical proficiency are desirable traits in a new hire. The ability to communicate effectively, stay engaged with clientele, and navigate the financial landscape is key for those looking to work in leading fintechs.

She joined Flutterwave back in 2017 as an analyst and, over the years, has grown to lead the global quality assurance team. Through increased responsibility, increased managerial responsibilities, and by leading distributed teams across geographies, she has gained a ton of personal and professional experience.

“Similarly, our senior product manager for remittances started off as an analyst in 2016. In the span of seven years, he now handles the product management lifecycle for our remittance products (SendApp and SWAP) and leads a globally distributed team of product managers. “
