The Inland Revenue is already one of almost 200 organisations that accept payments through Alliance & Leicester's existing BillPay service. To access the service, users click on a link on the bill issuer's Web site to visit BillPay directly. They can then make payments with a debit card, even if they do not have an online bank account.

With BillPayPlus, organisations have their own branded payment service integrated with their own Web site.

Darren Whiteley, product manager for bill payments at Alliance & Leicester Commercial Bank, says: "With this new system we can tailor our offering to the customer's needs, speeding up the process and ensuring Inland Revenue customers get the highest levels of service possible."

Taxpayers paid almost £5 million to the Inland Revenue on 31 January alone this year via BillPay to beat that day's self-assessment deadline.
