Consumers withdrew over £1.1 billion from just under 4000 Barclays and Woolwich ATMs in the run up to Christmas, a fall of around eight per cent on 2001.

According to Barclays, the average amount withdrawn was £70.

The busiest day was Saturday 21 December, with Christmas shoppers withdrawing nearly £70 million from the bank's cash machine network. Customers even took out cash on Christmas Day, with over 80,000 transactions totalling £5.7 million dispensed from Barclays' machines.

The busiest ATM over the festive period was in Forest Road, Walthamstow, London, where £1.25 million was issued throughout December.

Barclaycard has also announced that spending was up by seven per cent in the week leading up to Christmas compared to this time last year, with an overall increase of 5.3 per cent for the month of December.
