The bank will use the ID 1000 Live Scan identification system to electronically scan fingerprints.

The biometric system then allows the prints to be transmitted in digital format to the American Bankers Association (ABA) and FBI for screening.

The bank says it can now get screened results back within five to seven working days while the ink-on-paper process took three to six weeks.

Mark Schmidt, Union Bank's senior vice president of human resources adds: "We've heard of instances where crime rings will seek to place one of their members in a bank on a temporary basis knowing that the traditional background checks will take some time, giving them a short period in which to conduct fraud.

"The Cross Match Live Scan system with its rapid turnaround capability eliminates that opportunity."
