Under a new partnership between the card giant and McDonald's, customers who pay with an eligible AmEx card at the counter will see an option on the screen to use points, and the number of points needed for the order.

With most cardholders getting a point for every dollar they spend and a point worth one penny, customers will need to lay out $100 to get a free cup of McDonald's coffee.

The feature, initially available in select US cities but coming to all participating McDonald's by December, is the first time AmEx has let cardholders redeem points at the till.

The firm boasts that there are no codes, apps or registration involved, although for drive-thru customers the process is a little more convoluted, requiring them to pay normally and then use points later through the AmEx app or website.

Leslie Berland, EV, digital partnerships and development, American Express, says: "Card Members love using Membership Rewards points in everyday, relevant ways, and we're leveraging our technology to make it easy and seamless to redeem points in real-time."

AmEx is also promising to donate $1 to the Ronald McDonald House Charities each time someone pays with points, until a $500,000 limit is hit.

You won't get "fries with that", though! Talking of which, I thought the smallest McCafe cost more than $2, thereby calling for a $200 outlay on the AmEx card?
