The latest version of the Uber iOS app will give AmEx members in the US who have cards on file with the taxi-killing firm the chance to enrol their cards in the programme.

Once signed up, they can pay for Uber rides using AmEx reward points. Alternatively, they can choose the 'Earn 2x points' option within the app and score twice as many points as they normally would for paying for their journeys.

Leslie Berland, SVP, digital partnerships and development, AmEx, says: "Through this new, slick and powerful integration with Uber, one of the most forward-looking, mobile-based services in the industry, we are leveraging our unique technology to add a real-time benefit where we know our Card Members want it."

Last year AmEx struck a similar deal with VeriFone to let cardmembers in New York City use their accumulated loyalty points to pay for taxi fares.

Loyalty reward points are becoming very popular among people. It helps to create trustworthiness between business and customer. Seems ubers finds the way to bring its taxi dispatch system to next milestone. I beleive this is legitimate way to reach more users as well as hold existing users.

Kudos to Uber. They've developed a system that works better than traditional taxis and allowing the use of alternative currency is another consumer-friendly initiative.
