In Denmark, Carlsberg is placing chip-impregnated beer mats and bluetooth beacons at 250 bars across the capital. The mats are emblazoned with a QR code which provides a link to the brewery's Crowdit nightlife app, from which mobile phone users can order a free pint.

London-based Tamoco has also partnered with taxi hailing service Uber on the provision of more than 100,000 bar runners, beer mats and other promotional materials equipped with NFC tags at 100 of the capital's pubs, bars and cafes.

Customers are able to scan the codes with their smartphones and download the Uber app to order a taxi home. The smartphone connects with bluetooth beacons hosted on digital posters and media screens supplied by D-Media.

D-Media CEO Kevin Dougall says: "Beacons are becoming more and more mainstream, with their use in the retail sector increasing rapidly. Our digital posters are designed to host beacons, offering our clients the opportunity to engage directly with users of their apps - in the right place and at the right time".
