With Christmas approaching, Square has added a virtual gift card feature to its Wallet app, enabling users to send and receive funds that can be spent at specific retailers.

The updated iOS and Android Square Wallet app lets people search the company's directory of merchants to find one that is local and suitable for the gift's recipient. They then choose how much to give - between $10 and $1000 - and write a message for the 'card', which arrives in the form of an e-mail.

The recipient can then add the card to their Square Wallet app or, if they have a device running iOS 6, Apple's Passbook digital wallet. For those without smartphones, the e-mail contains a QR code which can be printed and taken to the retailer.
