The issue first surfaced in July but was not spotted until December and has affected around two per cent of tranasctions carried out through the app, a spokesman told the Times.

Citi insists that the bug has not affected other mobile applications but some customers claim that they have been charged twice despite not using the iPad tool.

The bug was fixed as soon as it was discovered and affected customers reimbursed and refunded for any charges they incurred as a result of the mistakes.

All the testing in the world never seems to catch ever little bug before full operation - how frustrating this must be for Citi.

Bring back controlled deployment programs rather than huge rollouts is one solution to contain these type of issues.

I love the comment in the original New York Times article :

A Citi spokesperson said that it only affected "a limited number of customers" - I'm relieved about that - it would have been catastrophic if it had affected an "unlimited" number of customers!?
