First National Bank of South Africa is using mobile phones and SMS to provide temporary PIN codes for customers to make ATM cash withdrawals without the use of a bank card.
The ATM cash withdrawal option has been made available as part of FNB's Cellphone Banking menu. Customers logging in on their mobile type in the amount they wish to withdraw and specify the account details. In return they receive a one-time temporary PIN code by SMS, which must be used within 30 minutes of receipt.
CEO of FNB Cellphone Banking Solutions, Ravesh Ramlakan says: "We've monitored customer behaviour and have found that they often have to enter a branch to get cash because they've left their bank cards at home. Now, when you forget your purse or wallet at home, or just quickly need cash for life's little emergencies, you can simply use your cellphone."
Finextra comment This all seems a little bizarre to us. We're assuming that the one-time PIN provides direct access at the ATM, without the need for card activation. But, really, how often is the average person on the road without their wallet and/or plastic cards, but in possession of their mobile?
