The bank told local reporters the glitch occured during overnight batch processing. The error affected around 10% of domestic payments made using its Direct Online corporate banking system.

However the problem did not affect other payments systems like Internet banking, says ANZ.

The bank said the error affected around 10 percent of the transactions processed by this part of its system.

In July a systems glitch left thousands of National Australia Bank customers unable to access their salaries after a software error prevented many electronic payments from being processed.

This came just weeks after a processing error at Westpac led some payments to fail and duplicated tens of thousands of others in and out of customer accounts.
