The technical failure left ANZ personal and business Internet banking users unable to pay bills and transfer money between accounts. The lock-out was traced back to a faulty computer auditing program.

The outage follows similar embarrassments at other leading Australian banks. The Westpac home page went offline for two days last week after a software upgrade threw the bank's systems for six.

In early August, National Australia Bank, Bank of Queensland and Commonwealth Bank also suffered Internet breakdowns following routine software upgrades.
