Bluetooth to transform ATMs says NCR

The introduction of Bluetooth technology could have a significant impact on ATM usage throughout the globe, providing the link between the mobile world and self-service with the user carrying the interface device. This was the forecast made by NCR mobility programme director Mel Walter, in a speech to the ATMIA Conference in Clearwater, Florida.

Addressing the theme of "mobile fulfillment," Walter envisioned a future in which a mobile phone might enable communication with NCR cash machines and kiosks, delivering a range of additional fulfillment services via the existing infrastructure of the ATM channel.

"The days of the ATM simply providing a cash delivery mechanism are already long gone...The combination of access to mobile media and the print and delivery facilities available at the machines could open up a number of new opportunities for those with a mobile lifestyle," says Walter.

According to NCR, the high street cash machine network provides consumers with convenient access to the full size screens, high quality printers and security that mobile phones will never be able to offer.

"With Bluetooth technology, the Self-Service TouchPoint offers more than a cash dispenser - it could become a fulfillment centre for mobile services beyond banking," says Walter. "Whether it is getting a map printed, getting tickets for tonight's entertainment, or simply getting a photograph printed from your digital camera, the ATM could prove to be the crucial delivery mechanism for those with an increasingly busy mobile lifestyle."
