You have initiated one of the all time discussions, real time billing reports, which majorly affects the services sector.

As an MSP, keeping an eye on our billing cycle and if had the chance to receive real time billing reports, that would help us make our IT decisions perfectly easy. I remember posting a similar comment on a similar topic last year, during the same time (remember this from the IT admin day) and now I am still talking about the same.

We had been using various tools to automate our billing cycle and here are some to note: Replicon, Freshbooks, etc. But none fulfilled our requirements. We are now evaluating Vorex, and we are pretty confident with the tool so far, we are on a trial now and will transition early next month. Here's the link to the tool.
