OK. I admit I had to look it up. But I now realise that Jeremy is making an apt evolutionary metaphor rather than a comparison with the tricky geography of Cumbria and the UK Lake District. Thank goodness for the API-rich world of Wikipedia. Without it I might forever have associated APIs with sticky toffee pudding, Cumberland sausage and long rambling walks. Unfortunately though, I still cannot get the world gurning championships images out of my head.

Dear Grandson... Unfortunately your last correspondence made me feel a bit dizzy. My medic (Dr. Ebarts) tried to reassure me, and also gave me some new medicine. But this actually made me feel worse. I hope you don't mind if we could just carry on as normal - if you're running short, I can just send you some money in an envelope.

Bob, we seem to have entered a curious regulatory era, characterised by principles and abstract standards. So I sympahise with your Standards-Angst!
EBA's regulatory standards could specify data formats (and other regulatory tests) for Access to the Account (XS2A) that differ, and possibly trump, the UK's OBWG's initiative. But the impact will be minimised if banks have adopted a flexible API-based approach, not just for Open Banking, but for all collaborative ventures. This API-led thinking allows a radically more agile approach to the traditional response where you wait for explicit specifications before committing to an enterprise messaging development program. Too idealistic?

Yep - well said Paul. "Becoming more familiar" with APIs and the developer community is essential. And to paraphrase an Akana comment from last year, the API ought to be viewed as the new website.

Last time my family stayed at a posh hotel, the guy in front paid with a few 500EURO notes. My kids stared, pointed and openly discussed it. I think that's fair enough - if you see someone engaged in new or unusual payments behaviour (Apple Pay, say on the London Undergroud) its not impolite to be curious, to ask questions (and to be accidentally stigmatic).

I tend to agree with "Which?" as the regulatory logic still seems to be based on the notion that (a) citizens give a damn about switching and (b) people behave rationally. A better understanding of the Behavioral Economics of the situation (and a recognition of t

Thanks for the insights. And kudos to CBA - not a bad implementation of consumer controls and "turn-on-and-off-ability".

I'm all in favour for a customer persolization approach - its an inevitable next step as contacless "goes mobile" (and App-enabled POS rises). I just recalled what's needed - I want my payments to be be "easily turn off and on-able".
A bit like the old UK "Creature Comfort" advertising campaign:

I'm off to Crowdcube with a ruff ruff business plan for "Payments Unleashed". Simon Cowell is bound to back it.
