Enterprise package suppliers in the vendor community will also need to pay close attention. Chrome is more than just another Web browser. It is also the start of an operating system play on the part of Google. Those vendors who haven't done so already might want to think of the implications for their financial model and look at new delivery methodologies revolving around Software as a Service and Cloud computing strategies.

James has a point. Cutting out uneccessary costs can help to create a leaner, more nimble organisation, better equipped to ride through the hard times and face off new competition. But, you have to be careful how you apply your cost-cutting measures if you're not to aleniate staff and stifle innovation. Saving a few pence on employee perks while the boardroom continues to enjoy extravagant spending is not good business practice.

Bank Machine MD Ron Delnevo has been touring radio and television newsrooms this morning to explain the scheme. Good citizenship aside, Bank Machine's business is primarily based around the provision of ATMs in low income areas and at military bases and hospitals. The long-term viability of the business is of course under threat from the provision of contactless payments, which have been pitched as a substitute for low-value cash transactions. Interesting that Delnevo is keen to highlight the Bank of England's backing of the programme - effectively pitting the central bank and its vested interest in the money supply chain, against the major retailers and high street banks who are pushing for more plastic payments.
