most of this movement happens through banks or exchange transfer companies. If a larger percentage moves to mobile channels, it should eliminate the intermediary costs.

Well, the industry has been writing off the magstripe for the past 5 years. However, as long as the USA doesn't shift, magstripe will continue to rule. Given the recession and the CARD Act ; the US is unlikely to make any expensive investments in Chip. So, get used to 'magstripe forever'.

Well, now it looks like all social security and pension schemes are Madoff / Ponzi schemes. All 'welfare' governments collect money from the latest entrants (young generation) and pass it on to the earlier members (pensioners). But the moot point is whether it is better to be a welfare government or leaving your citizens to fend for themselves - as most third world countries do. Imagine what effect all the job cuts would have if countries like UK and US don't have social security schemes.
