Why information is the new data

Near Real time commentary on investments from an asset manager while sounding like music to our ears, strikes terror into asset managers staff i would think. That is the change in mindset that needs to be realised by the asset management industry, the first to adopt a more open mindset may just reap the benefits while the others  in their sector are in their vapour trail. plus any explosion in this type of information would lead to a more careful managment of real time data fees by the AM.

UBS bans chat rooms

a modern phone with 3G or 4G circumvents any corporate bans, plus voice calls between disposbale PAYG cellphones is the the best of breed protection any market rigger needs. The evidence of the LIBOR riggers stunned me just by the fact how stupid someone breaking the law can be...."email, yeah they wil never check that". However not all riggers or market maniplulators will be so ill informed. the more tech savvy will be using private chat software like jabber or even public IRC chat rooms (like freenode) that computer hackers have been using for years. However i would wager that services like CRYPTOCAT will be the newest tool in the untraceable messaging game "https://crypto.cat/"

Minority Report

Very enjoyable article, i would be interested if you feel the Banks getting smashed by PPI claims and Facebook's first financial report are linked by mis-selling ? IE Mis-selling of protection and the FB IPO mis-selling IE . Jimmy Lee of JPMorgan Chase described it as "the next great blue-chip"

75% of world's poor unbanked but mobile phones revolutionising access

I am a little confused by this story, how can the world's poor afford a mobile phone earning less than $2 a day, then use it to pay bills that they have no money left for?

Poachers turned gamekeepers

I agree with your sentiments, regulators created the HFT boom, however having worked at an Exchange, HFT firms are ideal customers, bringing in fast reliable transactional charges in quick order, thus I would expect most Exchanges to defend this type of client against regulators who may slow down order flow, although disguising the support under "Stifling innovation" rather than "crippling a reliable profitcenter" is clever on Leo Melamed's part.

Password protection shattered by cheap GPUs

i think two way authentication is the only way to protect yourself, however with RSA being hacked, i fear this solution is still not 100% secure with the leading vendor

NASDAQ OMX and LSE both left Reeling ?

des you may be right in your analysis of LSE and OMX, it can't be long before the exchange market boils down to a handful of Hyper Exchanges, in fact are we there already ? Having previously worked for ICE i have experienced first hand from within a predatory exchange how efficiently you can merge a rival's products into your own systems, NYBOT and ICE being my personal prime example

How Security savvy are Sony?

as a user of Sony's services i was too reading their slow ebb of information this week, being progressively shocked by facts such as passwords could be read by a hacker, thus were stored “in the clear”, the final nightmare of credit card numbers being obtained is again a fuzzy read between the lines “it should be ok” as the data “is encrypted somehow”. Perhaps the endless pages of the end user agreement required when you sign up should mention such facts, such as how Sony actually intend to protect your data on their systems, rather than all the “get out of jail free” statements of the usual end user agreements

Rise of the Boot Disk

i agree with you and i do mention USB sticks at the start of the article and of course mention this really is for home users only, if a user needs persistance then you are 100% correct a USB stick or Dual boot from HDU are only ways to go. In fact changing to Linux as perenent desktop would not be a bad choice :-)
