What was Money20/20 this year?

In one word “Swish”. Busy - Fun - Amazing – Concentrated

The Trends:

- Bigger. Almost all areas of the RAI venue that could be used, were used. There were many more companies, though sometimes with a smaller presence than in years past. In fact it was so big and busy I did not have time to meet with everyone because of the sheer long walking distances involved.

- More Mature. Many of the Startups that were previously just attending, now had stands, and the ones that had small stands had a more solid presence. But, not so for everyone. Many quite established Startups used the multi-stand approach from a country or saved on a stand completely. I did not see that as a sign of regression - but instead of a rationalisation.

- Cooperation. More Brands, fewer (but more keenly interested) investors, and more banks than ever were present. The space is looking to work together. I saw almost no investors that had booths, but they were around and they were walking up with much more focused conversations. Apple, Google and other big brands were either present with big booths or mixed in the crowd.

- The big Fintechs like Stripe or Visa were strong; but as an entrepreneur I felt them less. That means a stratification of the who’s who in fintech is happening.

- The after/pre parties and dinners were incredibly varied, but more focused on business than fun. Still we had more invites than we could do and enjoyed ourselves.

- Pitching was top notch. The Startup space has learned a lot. No one there was just having it on. That shows me that since investment has slowed many less “serious” players just weren’t there.

So overall, the sector is maturing. Focus is concentrated and discussions are thoughtful. The parties are turning into business opportunities. Everyone was there and really present, and AAZZUR had the most successful Money20/20 ever.

Well done and hats off to the M2020 Organizers for pulling off an incredible event, the best of the year and the best so far!
