Do you feel as though you are constantly wading through a never-ending sea of video call requests? Or maybe you feel disconnected from your colleagues—figuratively and literally—and are struggling to collaborate on projects, and would much rather you were
left alone to focus in peace and complete tasks solo.
While hybrid work has afforded many positives, it has also contributed to a new way of working that sometimes feels less productive and less personal, particularly if you become over-reliant on digital tools and technology, such as Slack or Loom, instead
of having a quick in-person conversation with someone.
'Pregaming' your meetings
One way to streamline your work day and make more sense of meetings is by ‘pregaming’ first.
This involves everyone involved setting out the agenda of the meeting beforehand by adding talking points to a shared document.
Not only will it allow people to prepare in advance, it will also hold people accountable, keep the meeting on track and prevent participants from going off on tangents (we have all been there).
Walk and talk
Or why not skip the traditional meeting concept entirely and invite a colleague to pop out for a coffee instead?
If you need to discuss something one-on-one but feel slightly awkward about sitting down in a formal meeting setting, or want to brainstorm a topic and feel that a change of scene will help get the creative juices flowing, going for a short walk together
can help.
When you are back at your desk, it’s a good idea to follow up with a set of action points so that any ideas gleaned or issues raised are jotted down for future reference.
Away days
As the adage goes, sometimes a change is as good as a rest. Case in point, company away days.
While watching Dave from accounts ascend an indoor climbing wall might not seem obviously beneficial to team morale, a break from the office can relieve stress and tension, encourage creativity, and give team members the chance to bond and learn more about
each other.
This is particularly relevant if some of your colleagues follow an alternative hybrid schedule to yours and you don’t get to see them in-person on your in-office days.
That said, if you feel as though your current employer isn’t doing enough to facilitate effective hybrid working and you’re disengaging from your role, or they are removing remote working options from the table entirely, it could be time to consider your
options elsewhere.
