If you are keen to start the new year with a
new job, the best time to begin the process was last month. The second best time is now.
Some 22% of workers hope to land a new job in 2024, according to a
recent survey of 5,000 workers, and 40% of these respondents believe January is the best time to start looking.
However, this does not align with timings outlined by hiring managers. In fact, those involved in hiring usually get the ball rolling once budgets for the upcoming year are confirmed in October or November.
Of hiring managers surveyed, 51% are keen to hire in autumn so new employees can complete the process, hand in their notice, and ‘hit the ground running’ early in the new year.
More than half (53%) of workers surveyed agreed January represents a new start, and 38% believe the new year is a good time to start a new job, as it allows you to set goals for the calendar year.
Hiring is a lengthy process and for the average successful candidate, it takes 33 days from their first application to signing a contract. That’s also only if you manage to land the first job you apply for. Most applicants will go through this process more
than once in the job hunting process.
Now add this to your notice period. A standard notice period is one month, but this can stretch to two or three for more senior positions. Realistically, if you start job hunting in January, you will not be starting a new role until March at the earliest.
Motivations for job hunting
In the same survey, 50% of respondents said salary alone would motivate them to move jobs, with 30% saying they are dissatisfied with their current salary.
Almost three quarters (71%) would only accept a job if the salary was at least a 10-12% increase on their current pay, indicative of the cost of living squeeze.
The results also reveal that 40% of respondents said better work-life balance is their top reason to start afresh in the new year, as return-to-office mandates continue to halt the hybrid and flexible working models that employees have enjoyed since the
onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Career development has also emerged as a key motivator for change. Almost half (48%) would move jobs to secure a promotion, and 33% of job hunters are keen for opportunities for developing new skills.
To enable these, 25% of respondents say employers need to provide clear expectations of what’s required to level up, while 27% said a lack of communication around career progression had them looking elsewhere.
