In a year marked by political volatility, continual regulatory pressures and an overwhelming conversation around instant payments and fraud, 2024 proved to be a year of as much financial obstacle as financial innovation. All, it must be said, for the positive progression of the industry.

Of course, when years like this occur, it paves the way for deep, often opposing debates and insightful predictions for the future trajectory of various sub sectors within fintech. A fascinating collaboration, Julia Thorn, senior marketing manager, financial crime compliance, LexisNexis Risk Solutions, and Robert Campbell, programme director, United Wildlife, The Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales, discussed how their two worlds collide. Using their joint report as a reference, they explained how wildlife trafficking should be categorised within the financial crime and money laundering terms used in other areas. 

9. Harmonising AI solutions in the fight against fraud

Yogesh Patel, CTO, Outseer focussed in this video on his understanding of how generative and predictive AI can be impactful for fighting payment fraud. As part of this, he explains what these systems require to be successful and how to continue to optimise security. The usage of AI, especially GenAI, was another key theme in 2024, including Finextra’s own inaugural event NextGenAI in November.

8. Financial Forecast 2024: What's Ahead?

Predict 2024 as a series occurs more than once in this list and Edward Harding, director of global strategic partnerships, Mambu used his episode to give a unique insight into what financial services could expect in 2024, referring to Mambu’s own predictions report. Regulations, GenAI and embedded finance featured quite heavily throughout.

7. Predicting growth for clearing houses and scheme operators in 2024

Paul Ruggieri, senior vice president, real time payments, product management, Mastercard joined the studio to give his predictions for what would happen to clearing houses and scheme operators in 2024. As part of this, he delved into another three key themes of 2024: the evolution of payments, modernisation and fraud prevention.

Another entry from the Predict 2024 series, Sumant Kuma, CTO, banking and financial markets, NTT DATA UK&I gave his thoughts, predictions and insights into what could be expected for the rest of 2024 when it came to the use of artificial intelligence for operations. This also included a conversation about the EU’s 2025 deadline.

Appearing for a second time, Yogesh Patel, CTO, Outseer also told FinextraTV about the regulations surrounding 3DS solutions and further discussed the key role of data within the success of these solutions. 

4. Striking the balance: Navigating e-commerce trends

Speaking to reporter Debi-Bell Hosking at MPE 2024, Karan Johal, global head of sales, Ecommpay gave his thoughts on the growing trends within the e-commerce landscape. 2024 was a very popular year for e-commerce with an increase in growth and new technologies emerging to increase both security and user experience, so this became another consistent theme.

3. How MiCA, Cryptocurrency and Blockchain are Key Drivers for the Fintech Industry

At Money 20/20 2024, FinextraTV interviewed Vedran Jankovic, sales head, virtual asset service providers, Deutsche Bank and Lukas Enzersdorfer, deputy CEO and chief operating officer, Bitpanda on fintech’s key trends and their own new partnership. Here was another discussion surrounding regulation, this time with reference to cryptocurrency in a bid to improve both usage and reputation.

2. Lord Christopher Holmes of Richmond MBE on what the AI Regulation Bill Means for Fintech

Speaking at IFGS 2024, Lord Cristopher Holmes discussed the Open Finance Task Force announcement as well as his AI Regulation Bill. Another enormous theme of 2024 being the tussle between AI and its regulation, several speakers have had a number of opinions on where the future looks set to go.

1. Transforming interoperability within trade finance

Finally, interviewing Iain MacLennan, head of trade and supply chain finance, Finastra and Peter Hazou, director of business development, Microsoft, it’s no surprise that our most popular video is around modernisation. With new emerging tech and regulations to follow, modernisation of multiple strands of fintech has been at the very forefront of discussion throughout 2024. In this case, the modernisation of trade finance was the central focus from blockchain to data interoperability.
