T-Mobile gives Mobile Money customers an extra $20 on their tax refund

T-Mobile CEO John Legere today announced via Twitter that T-Mobile customers with Mobile Money who set up and receive a direct deposit of their tax refund onto their registered T-Mobile Visa® Prepaid Card will get a $20 credit.

Plus, customers can get access to their tax refund faster than a traditional paper check refund. It’s free, fast and a more secure - and more lucrative - way to get your tax refund this year.

The Mobile Money tax offer begins January 14 and runs through April 30, 2015.

There are nearly 68 million “under-banked” people in the U.S. who could be paying upwards of $1,000* in annual fees just to access their own money. On average, Mobile Money saves each customer enough in check cashing fees to pay their monthly wireless bill for an entire year.

Background: T-Mobile introduced Mobile Money in January 2014 to free customers from traditional banking and check cashing fees. The T-Mobile Visa Prepaid Card works like a debit card, with a smartphone app to check your account balance. There are no credit checks and no minimum account balances if you are a T-Mobile customer. Additionally, there are no withdrawal fees at a network of more than 42,000 ATMs, no monthly maintenance fees, no reload fees in T-Mobile stores and no fees to use your T-Mobile Visa Prepaid Card.

*Based on 3% check-cashing fee imposed on the median annual household income (as calculated by the 2013 U.S. Census) multiplied over 30-year career.
