Electronic trading floor data volume is based largely on volatility, and 2011 has been a volatile year for financial markets. BNP Paribas' data warehouse manages billions of messages in real-time processing a Terabyte of raw data daily.

A half-rack Oracle Exadata Database Machine has helped BNP Paribas better manage this data growth and improve system performance.

The Oracle Hybrid Columnar Compression feature of Oracle Exadata Database Machine is used by the bank to compress the size of its active data, leading to easier data management and more efficient use of storage.

Oracle Exadata Database Machine went into production at BNP Paribas in July 2010, achieving 17x greater throughput without any changes to existing applications. BNP Paribas selected Oracle Exadata in May 2010.

Jim Duffy, senior business intelligence and data warehouse architect, BNP Paribas CIB, was honored recently as Data Warehouse Leader of the Year, Europe, Middle East and Africa, at Oracle OpenWorld 2011 in San Francisco.

Jim Duffy, along with Alex Afflerbach, Coumba Toure, and Maxime Gontcharov, make up the Front Office BI & DW Engineering team, which is charged with mastering all trading activity data between the bank's Global Equities and Commodity Derivatives (GECD) business and the world's electronic markets.

The award, one of several categories covered by the Oracle Excellence Awards, honors individuals who demonstrate excellent technical knowledge and innovative use of Oracle data warehouse technologies to the benefit of their business.

Oracle recognizes data warehouse leaders across Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Latin America / Caribbean, and North America.
