MB Way counts half of Portuguese bank account holders as its customers and holds a 45% market share of e-commerce transactions in the country.

“With almost three quarters of consumers researched by Ecommpay saying they might abandon an online purchase if their preferred payment method was not available, it’s critical that we give merchants the ability to optimise their checkout with local APMs”, explained Rosanna Helm-Visscher, Global Head of Partnerships, Ecommpay. “We are, therefore, on an ambitious programme of adding market-specific APMs to our platform including MB Way.”

Ecommpay merchant clients based in any geography can offer MB Way as a payment option for Portuguese customers, simplifying and accelerating expansion into Portugal.

With MB Way e-wallet, customers can make EUR payments, send or request money, and manage funds using their mobile application, without having to input card details in every transaction. To pay online, customers select the MB Way logo from the list of express checkout options and enter their mobile phone number, then validate the purchase on their device by entering their MB Way PIN or TouchID.

MB Way is supported by 28 banks, with 95% market coverage. Especially appealing to the younger market, 57% of young adults use MB Way for e-commerce purchases, and 47% of the Portuguese population uses merchants that accept the payment method, demonstrating its value as a familiar payment option for e-commerce merchants trading in Portugal.
Rosanna Helm-Visscher added: “Our goal is to simplify the fragmented alternative payment method landscape for merchants by adding as many APMs as possible - we now have more than 100 already on our platform.

“With MB Way on board, merchants can now expand into Portugal without the need to seek and onboard with a dedicated Portuguese Payment Service Provider, which can add complexity and increase resource demand. With a growing range of regional payment options available in our dynamic checkout, the payment journey is simpler for every customer, reducing friction and the chance of cart abandonment.”
