The latest data from the bank shows an 85% surge in the number of 56—60 year olds logging onto its online service in the UK — the joint highest increase during 2002.

The largest number of Internet banking users are under 30, with over half a million regularly logging on at www.hsbc.co.uk. However, three of the top four increases in online banking usage were amongst the over-55s.

Mike Constantine, head of electronic services at HSBC, says: "Our figures show that getting a bus pass doesn’t necessarily mean that modern technology will pass you by. It is a sign that more customers than ever are recognising how convenient and easy it is to use our Internet banking service."
