The commercial pilot is the first stage of a Swiss-wide roll-out, targeted for completion to meet the EMV deadline at the end of 2004. All Swiss acquirers have now completed EMV/ep2 implementation on the host side.

CCV-CardPay, a VeriFone partner which supplied the software for the terminals, has installed VeriFone's Omni 3740 terminals and SC 5000 programmable smart card PINpads at stores in Zurich. The terminal runs VeriFone's Verix multi-application architecture and supports value-added functions including mobile phone top-ups and loyalty programmes.

VeriFone says a major requirement of the ep2 project is the ability to process all cards currently available in the Swiss market, including specific customer cards such as the Migros' M-Card.

VeriFone is the second supplier of terminals for the ep2 pilot in Switzerland.
