Westpac says its IT security team became aware of the imitation site last week and "immediately took steps to block the link through to www.westpac.com.au".

The bank says that the mirror image site was unable to capture any data inputs and that "at no time have our customers details been exposed or at risk".

The incident comes hard on the heels of a nationwide e-mail scam that duped some Commonwealth Bank customers into revealing their NetBank Internet account details at a bogus CBA site housed in Florida.

Surry Hills police last week charged a 25-year old man in connection with the NetBank scam.
