Consultancy firm 1E says it has completed the first of the two-phase project, conducted as part of the society's migration from Windows NT 4.0 and SMS 1.2 to Windows 2000 and SMS 2.0.

SMS 2.0 will enable Nationwide's IT department to centralise control of its 17,000+ network of PCs and servers.

Nationwide says the system will also enable it to roll out and monitor software and hardware and provide support for its growing number of remote workers.

Arthur Amos, head of technology support, adds: "SMS 2.0 is a significant step forward for installing, configuring and maintaining software and hardware across a large distributed network."
