Identrus was established in 1999 by a group of eight leading banks to develop interoperable PKI-based authentication services for corporate customers trading over public networks. However, despite its strong backing the company has failed to develop a head of steam and was recently forced into a merger with US-based Digital Signature Trust Company.

In a statement, Identrus says Tallent, a former Chase Manhattan VP who had led the utility from inception, has decided that it is "time to seek new challenges and explore new opportunities outside of our company."

His interim replacement at the helm is a 20-year banking industry veteran who most recently held a leadership role in establishing ANZ's business e-eommerce unit, including strategy setting and organisational development.

He comments: "Identrus is now entering a new phase with a sharp focus on helping our member banks migrate core business processes to the Internet with the highest level of authentication and identity services."
