Wells goes wireless for Winter Olympics

Wells Fargo has teamed up with US Wireless Data to equip taxis in Salt Lake City with mobile facilities for taking credit card payment for fares.

Visitors to Salt Lake City enjoying the Winter Olympic Games will be able to use their credit cards to pay for cab rides in taxis from the Ute Taxicab Company.

The wireless taxicab technology is similar to credit card terminals used in stores, allowing taxicab drivers to swipe a credit card or other payment card and receive a real-time authorisation. It uses proprietary Synapse software from US Wireless Data to communicate over a wireless data network.

Todd Ablowitz, director of product strategy and implementation for Wells Fargo Merchant Services, says: "US Wireless Data is helping us make travel more convenient for passengers, allowing taxi drivers to pick up more fares because being low on cash is no longer an obstacle to taking a cab."
