The feature means new customers will not have to enter the card number, or even take a picture of it, to activate their card.

In a blog, Monzo says that when a user taps a new card against their handset, it reads the NFC tag and checks whether it has the expected data, extracting the PAN number and sending it to the bank's backend servers.

The feature is only available on Android because Google, unlike Apple, lets third party developers access its NFC function.
