Sonja Roberts, director of e-commerce at Barclaycard, comments: "Barclaycard considers the Internet an essential medium for the delivery of goods and services for consumers and merchants."

Barclaycard is initally planning to make the wallet available to cardholders through Shopsmart, its subsidiary comparison shopping Website and mall for use at all of its retail partners.

The bank is using Trintech's PayWare eIssuer technology to deliver its online virtual credit card purchase and payment solution.

Roberts says the implementation of the technology will enable the bank to extend its reach beyond the Internet and into the mobile and set-top markets in the near future.
