Barclays' South African unit Absa has struck a deal with mobile network operators that means that its customers will be able to use its app even when they run out of phone data.
Under a reverse billing deal with South Africa's four major mobile networks - Cell C, MTN, Telkom and Vodacom - data costs will be charged to Absa when customers open its app.
Jan Moganwa, chief executive, customer solutions, Absa retail and business banking, says: "Our customers are the heart of our business and the ability to access our mobile banking platform regardless of your data standing shows the commitment that we have as a bank to help all our customers prosper."
