The company is partnering with Oberthur Technologies and Cembra Money Bank to equip the smart watch with a 'PayChip' secured within the watch strap that can be used to make payments with a flick of the wrist.

The Helvitica brand, which also provides users with an analogue readout of sleep and activity-tracking data, is the first of the company's classic Swiss watches to get the NFC treatment. However Mondaine says it is also offering this technology with several other models.

Mondaine is the latest Swiss watchmaker to tap into the wearable payments trend, following in the footsteps of Tag Heuer and Swatch, who are looking to take on the likes of interlopers such as Apple and Samsung by aligning the classic aesthetics of a traditional Swiss watch with new high-tech features.
