Burke was most recently CMO, core products, at Visa, where he led global and country marketing for the card scheme's consumer and commercial products.

Before Visa, Burke was the president of JWT San Francisco and co-founder of Tonic 360, an advertising agency serving digital brands.

"Square is transforming the way people buy and sell around the world," says Burke. "I'm really excited to join Square as they continue to deliver on their promise to make commerce easy while helping independent businesses thrive."

Last month, Square announced that it was looking to expand beyond North America by making its Register point-of-sale software available to businesses worldwide. The company also released its first chip card reader, complete with a $29 price tag, to replace its current free-of-charge mag-strip-only dongle.
