Madrid has become the latest city to embrace the concept of a Bitcoin Boulevard, with the Spanish capital's Serrano Street getting a cryptocurrency makeover this weekend.

More than 20 boutiques, shops and restaurants in the area are taking part in the two day event, which will include a pub crawl, treasure hunt and photo competition, according to Coindesk.

Big Bitcoin names, including Bitpay and Coinbase, as well as smaller local players like Pagobit are backing the event in a bid to spread the word about alternative currencies in Spain.

Although the event finishes tomorrow, all of the merchants taking part have committed to accepting Bitcoin for at least three months.
