The telco giant has integrated technology from Austrian software company Bluesource which lets users load their physical plastic cards onto their phones by either scanning them or typing in the numbers.

The free feature will sit alongside the SmartPass Visa-based contactless payments tool within Vodafone's mobile wallet in Germany, the Netherlands and Spain from later this month.

Stefano Parisse, group consumer services director, Vodafone, says: "Our customers want to take advantage of as many club, retail and membership offers as possible, but the number of plastic cards often exceed the capacity of their physical wallets.

"Vodafone's mobile wallet, when used with the mobile pocket app, removes that problem by allowing a user to load a limitless number of loyalty cards directly onto their phone. Participating retailers also benefit since they will be able to send vouchers and special offers directly to the Vodafone mobile wallets of their regular customers."

I thought that could be done on any phone... Starting back in 2010...

I use Keyring App on Android to store all my loyalty cards and I know many people who do the same on iPhones using Passbook. I haven't come across a single merchant who has invested in installing equipment to scan the barcodes off of my smartphone screens. However, with an increasing number of them willing to read the loyalty card numbers off my smartphone screens and credit rewards for my purchases, Keyring is at last proving useful. While Vodafone is not a trailblazer, it's at least a fast follower in expanding mobile wallet to support a powerful use case.
