Initially made available to Kindle Fire owners last year, Amazon Coins can be used to purchase apps, games and in-app items from the e-commerce giant's 100,000-strong store.

Amazon says that its new currency is an easy way for users to purchase from their phones and tablets, while for developers it's another opportunity to drive traffic and downloads.

Mike George, VP, Amazon Appstore and Games, claims that the firm has been amazed by the number of people using Coins on the Kindle Fire.

"Because customers can earn Coins when they buy apps in Amazon's Appstore, and because they can buy Coins themselves at up to a 10% discount, customers love the extra value they get," adds George.
