From February, Japanese users of NTT Docomo's iD mobile credit payment system will be able to tap and pay at around 1.2 million MasterCard PayPass terminals in over 50 countries.

The service, which requires subscribers to have a handset with a contactless chip, will let customers pay using either local currency or yen.

Meanwhile, in Japan, customers can use the telco's proprietary iD system for mobile credit payments via some 500,000 reader devices instore.

Earlier this year MasterCard outlined plans to expand its PayPass footprint in Japan with a pledge to deploy 410,000 contactless terminals throughout the country over the next three years.
