The free to license, globally available user interface software development kit (UI SDK) is aimed at issuers, mobile network operators and third party developers seeking to build contactless payments-related apps.

Although MasterCard has already approved over 70 handset models as PayPass compatible, until now highly-specialised skills were required to develop applications that could interface with the NFC capabilities.

The payments giant hopes that it can kick-start development with its new programmer-friendly set of functions designed to make it easier to quickly build payment apps.

The toolkit includes API code libraries; API specification documentation; a developer guide; sample UI app code; a white label reference UI application so financial institutions can embed contactless within their own branded app; and a test suite to ensure compliance.

Mung Ki Woo, group executive, mobile, MasterCard, says "we saw an opportunity to simultaneously help our partners and improve the overall user experience. Our first-ever UI SDK provides smart tools and makes it easier for our partners to issue a complete contactless payment solution on mobile."
