Australian bank Westpac is cutting 126 jobs, including 119 in information technology, and outsourcing the work to India in a bid to cut costs.
The technology employees, mostly based in Sydney and working in IT development and systems maintenance, will lose their jobs by July. The seven non-IT positions are in collections.
Westpac spokesman Paul Marriage told The Australian newspaper: "We are committed to retaining our core highly skilled technology workforce in Australia. But some IT roles can be more efficiently done by external specialists like IBM."
The latest cuts come just weeks after Westpac outlined plans to axe 400 positions and offshore another 150 roles to Bangalore. In November 188 jobs in the IT department were slashed.
