Visa Europe is investigating a possible data breach at an Eastern European payment processor that may have hit thousands of cardholders.
The firm has confirmed it is looking in to the problem which appears to have hit a processor serving a merchant chain operating in several Eastern European countries.
"Visa Europe has been informed of a potential data security breach at a European processor and an investigation is underway. We are working closely with our member banks to ensure cardholders are protected," says a statement.
Romania's state-owned CEC Bank has confirmed that it is already in the process of reissuing around 17,000 cards over the incident, according to the IDG News Service.
The Romanian Association of Banks has also issued a statement warning cardholders to monitor their accounts for suspicious activities.
