Reporting to chief executive Mike Smith, Currie moves from his previous role as MD of transaction banking in institutional. He joined ANZ in 2008 from HSBC.

Currie has been charged with delivering ANZ's "super regional strategy" through a "business transformation agenda" in technology, shared services and operations.

Earlier this year an internal review commissioned by the bank and carried out by Accenture warned that a lack of IT investment could hit this ambition to become a major regional player.

Chief Information Officer Anne Weatherston will now report to Currie instead of Smith, although ANZ insists that her continued membership of the management board reflects "the importance attached to technology".

Says Smith: "We have established a clear technology strategy for the Group and we have a significant competitive advantage in our technology and operations hubs."

Former COO David Cartwright, who has been responsible for global services and operations is leaving the firm.
