Wireless operator Orange's mobile contactless payments drive has arrived in Poland with the launch of the country's first commercial pilot of the technology.
Orange has been aggressively pushing mobile NFC payments in France, Spain and, through a partnership with BarclayCard, the UK in recent months.
Now, its Polish unit, PTK Centertel is working on a commercial pilot that will let several thousand participants make low value payments at the point of sale by tapping their handsets against the country's 35,000 contactless readers.
Gemalto is providing PTK Centertel and its partner banks with the NFC software and user interface applications securely embedded on a SIM, as well as Trusted Service Management services.
Krzysztof Sieczkowski, director, product and content development, PTK Centertel, says: "We need a complete solution to speed up our time-to-market, and leverage the strong contactless payment network already existing in Poland to make our consumer the first to benefit from the NFC experience."
